This Chicago sextet's third album is top-drawer American art pop. "Paint a pretty picture," singer-keyboardist Frank Navin teases in "Rrose Selavy's Valise," at the opening of Pedals. Crisp, lulling songs like "Lie Detector Test" and the throbbing "Impress Me" undercut proper pop-song construction with pauses, dissolves and arresting harmonic bridges. A stunner like "Paperback," delivered with exceptional promise by Amy Warren of the Chicago band Tallulah, packages savageness as sugar ("I want to know everything about your life, but I'm waiting for the paperback"), while other pieces, like "Jinxed," lean back and really explore the Bacharach-esque beyond. On "Pedals," the Aluminum Group wins its point: Pretty pictures will never look quite the same again. (RS 822)
